“After over a decade of pain, frustration and misdiagnosis, I was so happy to get the SI fusion and get my life back. Now I am back to living my life!“

Background

My pain started 18 years ago after the birth of my first child. I described it as tail bone pain back then. It would come and go, and I would occasionally see my primary care physician for treatment. I am a very active person and enjoyed participating in triathlons, competitive running and weight lifting. Over the years my pain increased in my lower back, and in front by my hip. I would describe this as nerve pain. I was seen by multiple orthopedic surgeons, spine specialists, and physical therapists. I had numerous x-rays and MRIs of my lumbar spine. No one was able to determine the source of my pain. I tried massage therapy, chiropractic and PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections. None of these treatments alleviated my pain.

In 2011 I gave birth to twins. The pregnancy was difficult, complicated by pelvis and rib pain. I was still trying to stay active by running but it was too painful. I even wore an SI-Belt, but it was not helpful. I was having to use an adaptive kneeling chair at work because sitting was too painful. I had to cancel work trips because I could not sit on a plane. I would often use crutches or a wheel chair when I would have a really bad pain flare up.

Finally, an orthopedic surgeon I was seeing suggested we try an SI joint injection. I had good pain relief and he referred me to a new physical therapist. She was able to pinpoint my SI joint problem immediately. I continued with physical therapy and SI joint injections. I had good relief for short periods of time, but when I resumed my work out routine, the pain would return. I felt like these treatments where just a band aid and I started to look for a more permanent solution. I found the SI-BONE website, did some research, and requested a list of trained surgeons in my area.

I set up a consultation with a surgeon in my area and he was able to identify my pain generator on my first visit. He performed a series of provocative maneuvers that sent me flying off the table because they were so painful. Because I had already tried all conservative treatment options to manage my pain, he offered me the iFuse procedure as a permanent solution.

In 2018 I underwent a left SI joint fusion utilizing the iFuse Implant System. I felt better immediately after surgery. I had surgical pain, but it was different. I was able to sit without discomfort within a few days. I was on protective weight bearing for 6 weeks utilizing crutches which was mentally tough for me. Soon after, I was released to resume travel for work. I am now back to running, weight lifting, attending spin classes and playing with my kids.
